Visit Bamyan

Bamyan

Bamyan is a gorgeous province in the central highlands of Afghanistan. It's home to two breathtaking Buddha statues carved into a mountain side, known as the Bamyan Buddhas. These carved statues are an important historical site and have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The two statues were built sometime between the 3rd and 5th centuries AD, but sadly were destroyed by the Taliban in 2001.

The area has so much to explore for tourists! Head to Shahr-e Gholghola (City of Screams) to learn about its fascinating history that dates back to Genghis Khan's invasion or take a relaxing stroll around Band-e Amir National Park, Afghanistan's first national park with its five deep blue lakes set amidst mountains and canyons. For foodies, there is plenty of delicious Afghan cuisine from grilled kebabs to fresh naan breads.

An interesting fact about Bamyan is that it was part of the Silk Road during antiquity and played an important role for merchants travelling East or West; providing them with rest, supplies and security on their long journeys ahead.
