Bamyan is a city located in the central highlands of Afghanistan. It is the largest provincial capital, and has been an important center of culture and trade since ancient times. The city is framed by two spectacular mountains; Koh-i Baba to the south and Koh-i Hazaras to the north. These mountains are home to several archaeological sites, including caves that were once used by Buddhist monks as monasteries.
The city itself features a number of attractions, such as its great bazaar which offers diverse Afghan crafts and delicacies. There are also several museums featuring artifacts from various eras in Bamyan's history, including Hindu statues from the 4th century BC and an old castle dating back to 16th century CE when Bamyan was part of the Muslim Mughal Empire.
Visitors can also explore Qala-e Zal -the old palace destroyed by Genghis Khan-, or take a trip up one of Bamyan's mountains for incredible views over this historic region of Afghanistan. A visit here wouldn't be complete without trying some traditional dishes like qabili palau (rice with meat) served with naan (flatbread).
