Visit Farah


Farah is a province in western Afghanistan with a population of around 586,000 people. It is known for its beautiful landscape and its historical sites. The capital of Farah is the city of Farah, which has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

One tourist attraction in Farah is the ancient ruins of Takht-i-Bahi on the outskirts of city. This archaeological site dates back to the 1st century BC and there are still remains from various periods such as Achaemenid, Kushan, Sasanian and Islamic era visible there today. Another tourist hot spot is the ruins of Niakarkhteh, located east of Farah City in Khak-e Sefid Village. This area has some interesting rock shelters containing stone carvings from prehistoric times that offer insight into early cultures who inhabited this region thousands years ago.

An interesting historical fact about Farah province relates to it's name which comes from Alexander's general Perdiccas (the "Farrash") who annexed parts of present day Afghanistan during his rule in 326 BC after conquering Persia at that time .
