Visit Herāt

Herat is a city in western Afghanistan, located in the valley of the Hari River. It is one of the oldest cities in Afghanistan, and has been inhabited since at least 500 BCE. Herat was once a major center of Islamic culture, literature, and art and was an important commercial hub along the Silk Road.

A visit to Herat today will take you to sights such as the Citadel of Alexander or Ghal'eh Jahan Square. The Citadel has been damaged by war but still stands proud with its impressive walls and towers. The square was built during the Safavid dynasty in 1610 and it's now a popular spot for tourists who come to admire its beautiful architecture from different eras. There are also mosques, bazaars and several museums around town reflecting its rich history and culture.

An interesting historical fact about Herat is that it served as an intellectual center for many centuries drawing scholars from across Central Asia including Ibn Sina (Avicenna) who wrote several books here about medicine and philosophy - some which are still considered classics today!
