Visit Hilmand

Gereshk

The Hilmand region of Afghanistan is a culturally rich area bordered by Pakistan to the south. It is home to several ancient cities that have been inhabited for thousands of years. The city of Lashkar Gah is one of the most important places in the area, and it serves as the capital of Helmand Province. The city has an old fort, mosques, and other traditional buildings dating back centuries.

One popular tourist destination in Helmand Province is Gereshk, an ancient town located on both sides of the Hari River. Here you can explore historical artifacts from various periods throughout time and see colorful bazaars selling local handicrafts and goods. Another must-see tourist attraction in this region is Bost Citadel which's a pre-Islamic fortress built by Emperor Alexander the Great during his invasion in 327 BC. It stands on a hilltop overlooking the nearby towns and villages giving travelers magnificent views from its walls.

An interesting historical fact about this region is that British forces were stationed here for more than 10 years during their occupation (2006-2014) to fight against Taliban insurgents in southern Afghanistan. This long presence left a mark on this part of Afghanistan evidenced by monuments dedicated to fallen British soldiers still standing today as reminders of their service there during wartime operations
