Castle

Berat Castle, also known as the Citadel of Berat, is a fortress overlooking the town of Berat, Albania. It dates back to the 4th century BC and is one of the oldest and most enchanting structures in the region. The castle is perched on a rocky hill on the left bank of the river Osum and is accessible via a steep path. It offers a panoramic view of the city and the surrounding countryside that is truly breathtaking.

Inside the castle complex, visitors can explore the many Byzantine churches, with their beautiful frescoes and icons. One of the main attractions is the 13th-century Church of the Holy Trinity, which is known for its stunning frescoes. Another must-see is the Onufri Museum, named after the famous 16th-century icon painter. The museum houses a collection of his works and other religious artifacts.

Plan your visit

  1. Wear comfortable shoes - The castle is built on a steep hill and there are many steps so make sure you wear comfortable shoes that will provide good grip.
  2. Bring water - Make sure to bring plenty of water as it can get very hot in the summer months and the walk up the hill can be quite tiring!
  3. Shield your eyes from the sun - The view from Berat Castle is incredible but if you don’t want to get blinded by the sun, make sure to bring along a pair of sunglasses or a hat for protection.
  4. Explore hidden paths and stairways - As you explore Berat Castle look out for hidden stairways, nooks and crannies that will take you off the beaten path for amazing, lesser known views of this historical monument!
  5. Take lots of pictures! - Don’t forget your camera because after all, what’s an adventure without capturing memories?
