The Berry Islands of the Bahamas are a small and secluded archipelago located in the Atlantic Ocean, northeast of Nassau. There are over 30 islands and cays that make up this island chain, with a total land area of only 31 square miles. The islands have an interesting history stretching back to 1629 when they were first sighted by Captain William Sayle on his journey to colonize Bermuda. Since then they have been inhabited by pirates, privateers, refugees from Haiti's revolution in 1804, Union troops during the American Civil War in 1861-1865, and today are home to a diverse blend of Bahamians from both East Indian and African descent.
