Visit Saint John

Saint John of Barbados is the patron saint of the Caribbean island nation. He was a Spanish explorer and missionary who arrived to Barbados in 1536 and established Fort Saint John. This fort served as a refuge for the first settlers on this small island.

Today, visitors to Barbados can visit St. John's Parish Church, which stands near the ruins of Fort Saint John and serves as a reminder of its historical significance. Tourists can also explore St. Nicholas Abbey, one of the oldest surviving plantation houses in the Caribbean region that dates back to 1658. Visitors can take guided tours through its grounds and learn about its history while taking in stunning views of nearby sea cliffs.

An interesting fact about this area is that it was here that Christopher Columbus landed on his second voyage to what he thought were "the Indies". He named this area Santa Maria de Guadalupe de Extremadura after his ship's destination port, thinking it was part of Asia!
