Visit Pemagatshel District


Pemagatshel District is a part of Bhutan's eastern region, located on the border with India. This district covers an area of 541 square km and has a population of around 30,000 people. It comprises fifteen gewogs (blocks) and seventy-one chiwogs (hamlets).

The district is known for its beautiful landscape which consists of lush forests, terraced fields, rivers and streams. The main crops grown in this region are rice, maize and millet. Tourists can visit the Gangar Monastery which dates back to the 16th century or explore the pristine nature at Sarpang Dzong which overlooks the river valley below. There are also many caves in Pemagatshel such as Kila Goenpa which is believed to be associated with Guru Rinpoche's journey to Tibet from Bhutan in 746 AD.
