Visit Punakha District

The Punakha District of Bhutan is a beautiful mountain region with lush green valleys and majestic snow-capped peaks. It was the former capital of Bhutan, and many important historical buildings remain. The area is known for its ancient monasteries, such as the iconic Punakha Dzong, built in 1637 and still functioning as an administrative center for the region. In addition to its cultural attractions, there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking and rafting on the Mo Chu River.

For tourists looking to get out into nature, two must-see sites are Dochula Pass, a spectacular mountain pass with 108 drukpa chortens (Buddhist shrines) lining its ridge; and Chimi Lhakhang Temple, home to a renowned fertility shrine dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kuenley or 'the Divine Madman'. For history buffs there's plenty to explore - Punakha was once home to Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal - founder of modern Bhutan - who unified Bhutan in 1636 under one rule at Punakha's Dzong fortress.
