Samdrup Jongkhar District is located at the southeastern end of Bhutan bordering Assam in India. It is one of the largest districts in Bhutan and covers an area of 1,200sq km. The district is surrounded by the Himalayan mountain range and part of it lies within a protected wildlife sanctuary.

The district is populated largely by Sharchops, a semi nomadic agricultural community that practices transhumance farming which supports their livelihoods. The district has some interesting tourist attractions to offer such as the Dungkar Buzur Monastery which was founded in 1616 by Trulku Ngawang Tenzin and Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan's oldest temples built almost 1,300 years ago by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo.

Samdrup Jongkhar also boasts many natural wonders including virgin forests with diverse flora and fauna species. Birdwatching enthusiasts can spot species like Pied Hornbill, Grey-backed Shrike, Long-tailed Broadbill among some others while trekking through its jungles while botanists can marvel at some rare wild orchids too! Additionally, visitors can experience traditional festivals like Tshechu where locals perform masked dance rituals dating back centuries ago as partof religious ceremonies to receive blessings from gods for peace and prosperity.
