Visit Zhemgang District


Zhemgang District is a province in the eastern region of Bhutan. It is populated by the Tshanglas, an ethnic group that speaks the Tibetan language. The district covers an area of 1,555 square kilometers and borders India to its east and Tibet to its north.

The main attractions in Zhemgang are the Kanglung Wildlife Reserve, home to numerous exotic animals including tigers, elephants and red pandas; as well as Gangtey Goenpa Monastery which offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. Other activities include trekking, fishing or visiting nearby villages for a glimpse into Bhutan's traditional way of life.

For those interested in history there is much to explore here too; some notable sites include Chhokhor Rabdey (a 17th century monastery) and Nalanda Archaeological Site (believed to be one of Buddhism's oldest monasteries). Additionally there are many ancient fortresses scattered around Zhemgang built centuries ago by various warring clans vying for power over this land rich with timber and spices
