The La Paz Department of Bolivia is located in the west-central part of the country and is home to its capital city, La Paz. It is a diverse region that offers plenty for travelers to explore. The vibrant city of La Paz provides tourists with an exciting mix of history and modernity, as well as plenty of sites to explore like Plaza Murillo, Calle Jaen, San Francisco Church and more. One interesting historical fact about La Paz is that it was founded by Pedro de la Gasca in 1548 who named the area Nuestra Senora de la Paz (Our Lady of Peace). The department was one of the nine original departments established in 1826 when Bolivia declared independence from Spain. Today with its high altitude cities bordered by soaring snowcapped Andean peaks, colorful markets, traditional festivals, vibrant culture and warm people it has become one of Bolivia's premier tourist destinations.
