Visit Tarija Department

The Tarija Department of Bolivia is a stunningly beautiful region located in the south east of the country. It borders Argentina and Paraguay, so the culture here is heavily influenced by its neighbours. The capital city of Tarija is known for its colonial buildings and vineyards which produce some of Bolivia's best wines. The city also has many parks and plazas, making it an ideal place to explore.

For adventurous travellers, there are many outdoor activities to be enjoyed in Tarija such as hiking through the Yungas Rainforest or whitewater rafting down the Guadalquivir River. There are also many ruins from pre-Columbian civilizations that can be explored such as Incallajta and Tombsa near Bermejo.

Tarija is also full of fascinating historical sites such as El Fuerte de Samaipata, an ancient fortress built in 1576 by Spanish explorers who sought to establish their rule over what was then indigenous territory. Today it remains a popular tourist destination with visitors coming from all over the world to admire its impressive architecture and learn about its history.
