Visit Egmont Islands

The Egmont Islands is a region of the British Indian Ocean Territory located in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Famous for its pristine white sand beaches and clear blue waters, this region offers visitors a tranquil and unspoiled holiday destination that is perfect for a relaxing getaway.

Atoll reefs provide great snorkeling opportunities, while tropical fish can be found swimming in abundance in the surrounding lagoons. The Egmont Islands is also home to biologically rich habitats where endangered turtles can safely nest on its undisturbed shores.

Two of the most visited places within this region are Diego Garcia, a US military base; and Eagle Island, an uninhabited cay that forms part of Chagos Archipelago National Park. Here visitors can explore local ecosystems full of rare wildlife species like iguanas, frigatebirds, albatrosses and endemic plants such as sea hibiscus trees.

This area's history dates back to when it was first inhabited by African slaves working in salt production more than 200 years ago. Today these small islands remain largely undeveloped - part of their charm - with only two permanent human populations based around Diego Garcia and Eagle Island respectively.
