Visit Kyustendil Province

The Kyustendil Province of Bulgaria is a sprawling area in the southwest that is bordered by Serbia and Macedonia. It has a rich history, being first settled by Thracian tribes in antiquity and then becoming part of the Roman Empire. Today, it is known for its lush natural scenery, traditional villages, numerous thermal springs and hot mineral water pools.

For tourists this region offers plenty to explore; the ancient fortress at Krakra located near Pernik and Samuil's Fortress in Melnik are two sights not to be missed. Many visitors come to take advantage of the healing waters from places like Ovcha Kupel that are said to have therapeutic benefits. Also worth visiting is Rila Monastery near Dupnitsa - one of Bulgaria's oldest monasteries with an interesting history connected to medieval Bulgarian culture.

The Kyustendil Province has also been home to some famous figures throughout its history; most notably Ivan Vazov - one of Bulgaria's greatest writers who was born here in 1850 and wrote his acclaimed novel 'Under the Yoke' whilst living nearby in Dupnitsa.
