Visit Pernik Province


The Pernik Province of Bulgaria is located in the western part of the country, situated between Sofia and Kyustendil. It is bordered by the Vit, Struma and Iskar rivers, providing many opportunities for outdoor recreation. Popular tourist attractions include Rila Monastery - a UNESCO cultural site - and Prohodna Cave, with its two natural skylights. Fans of history will enjoy exploring Pernik's ancient sites such as Burgas Fortress or Pravets Ruins.

Pernik has a long and colorful history that goes back to at least 5th century BC when it was inhabited by Thracian tribes. Throughout its history it has been ruled by Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans and Bulgarians who left behind numerous monuments from their time here. In 1514 a rebellion against Ottoman rule was led by local medieval hero Krakra of Pernik which resulted in liberation of large parts of western Bulgaria including the province itself.
