Visit Shumen


Shumen is a beautiful Bulgarian city located in the northeastern part of the country. It sits on the banks of the Shumen River and is known for its stunning mountain views and historical sites. Tourists flock to Shumen for its many attractions, such as Madara National Historical and Archaeological Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site featuring one of Bulgaria's most important archaeological monuments - The Madara Horseman - as well as several other ruins and cultural artifacts. Another popular tourist spot is the Monument to 1300 Years of Bulgaria, an impressive steel structure designed by famous architect Alexander Barov that stands over 50 meters tall.

Historically, Shumen has been an important centre since medieval times. During Ottoman rule it was known as 'Shamlu', meaning 'My Stronghold' in Turkish. It was also home to several prominent figures including Hristo Botev, considered a national hero in Bulgaria due to his involvement in struggle against Ottoman rule during the 19th century
