Visit Cankuzo Province


The Cankuzo Province of Burundi is a vibrant and diverse region, located in the eastern part of the country. With its capital located in Cankuzo, this province is home to many ethnicities and cultures. It is known for its breathtakingly beautiful landscape with highlands and lowlands, hills and plains, rivers and waterfalls.

Nature-lovers will enjoy visiting the Muramvya National Park which boasts abundant wildlife such as leopards, elephants, giraffes and hippos; or exploring the lush landscape around Lake Tanganyika, where one can spot all sorts of birds. Tourists can also take a daytrip to Gitera Waterfall located near Mahagi Hill which offers magnificent views of the surrounding area.

Cankuzo has a rich cultural history too; it was once part of a powerful kingdom known as Urundi founded by King Ntare Rushatsi who reigned from 1600-1652. To this day people come together to celebrate Urundi Day on 25 October each year in honour of their ancestor's legacy.
