Visit Kirundo Province


Kirundo Province is located in the north of Burundi, between Lake Tanganyika and Lake Rwihinda. It covers an area of 1,700 sq km and has a population of about 340,000 people. The majority of the population are Hutu with a few Tutsi minority.

Kirundo is known for its beautiful landscapes with rolling hills and lush vegetation. The Ruvubu National Park is one popular tourist destination located within the province which offers spectacular views from its mountains and rivers. Another great spot to visit is Mount Boali, an extinct volcano that stands at an impressive 1,837 meters tall.

Kirundo Province also has a rich history going back to pre-colonial times when it was inhabited by the Twa people who have since moved to other parts of Burundi. During colonial times it was part of German East Africa before being taken over by Belgium during World War I as part of their Congo colony. Today Kirundo remains an important cultural center in Burundi with many traditional music festivals taking place throughout the year.
