Visit Mwaro Province


The Mwaro Province of Burundi is a region located in the east-central part of the country. It is well known for its stunning geography, with lush green hills and valleys, as well as its rich culture and wildlife. The province has a population of about 435,000 people who are mostly farmers growing beans, maize, potatoes and cassava. It also hosts several national parks and reserves that are home to a variety of exotic wildlife species such as elephants, chimpanzees and giraffes.

Two popular places to visit in Mwaro Province are Gitega National Park which offers visitors endless opportunities for trekking and birdwatching; or Nyanza Lac Archaeological Site which consists of an ancient city dating back to the 15th century AD when it served as one of Burundi's capitals.

The history of Mwaro dates back centuries ago when it served as one of Burundi's royal provinces during precolonial times with many kings reigning over the region until colonial times in 1890. Today, it remains a traditional area where locals still practice their ancestral rituals despite having been exposed to changing times throughout recent decades.
