Visit Sotavento Islands

The Sotavento Islands region of Cape Verde encompasses the main island of Santiago, as well as the islands of Fogo and Brava. Located in the eastern part of the archipelago off the coast of northwestern Africa, these islands are known for their beautiful landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and vibrant nightlife.

One must-see attraction in Sotavento is Tarrafal Beach on Santiago Island. This picturesque beach is a popular spot for swimming, snorkeling and soaking up some sun during your vacation. On nearby Fogo Island you can visit the village of Cha das Caldeiras to learn more about how this active volcano has shaped life on this island throughout history.

An interesting historical fact about Sotavento is that it was once home to one of Europe's most notorious prisons - Ilha do Tarrafal Prison - which held political prisoners from 1938-1952 before finally being closed down by Portugal's Salazar regime. Today visitors can find an interpretive center located within what remains of this prison compound.
