Visit Tarrafal

Tarrafal is a coastal town located in the northwest of Santiago, one of the main islands of Cape Verde. It has a rich history that dates back to the 18th century when it served as an important whaling port. Today, Tarrafal is known for its stunning beaches and picturesque landscape.

The popular Praia da Chave Beach is located here and offers clear waters ideal for swimming and snorkeling. For some adventure, visitors can take to the sea for some deep-sea fishing or explore one of its many nearby caves. The village even has its own museum which has exhibits from days gone by including traditional clothes, tools, furniture and more.

One particularly interesting historical fact about Tarrafal is that during World War 2 it was used as a prisoner-of-war camp by the Portuguese government where they held political dissidents and opponents of their regime. A small memorial exists today to commemorate those who suffered here during this time period.
Tarrafal may be small but it certainly packs a punch with plenty of activities to keep visitors entertained!
