Visit Haut-Mbomou Prefecture

The Haut-Mbomou Prefecture region of the Central African Republic is both historically and culturally rich. Located in the southern part of the country, it borders South Sudan, Cameroon and Democratic Republic of Congo. The terrain is mostly flat with tropical forest ranging from savannas to floodplains along its rivers.

One popular tourist destination for those visiting this area is Zemio National Park, known for its wealth of wildlife including elephants, chimpanzees and buffaloes that roam freely amongst the lush vegetation. Yata Wildlife Reserve is also a great spot for safari tours to observe these animals in their natural habitat.

The city Bangassou was once home to Central Africa's first black mayor--Joseph Possamai--who was appointed by French colonial authorities in 1902 as a symbol of their benevolence towards Africa despite continued exploitation of resources and labour force through forced labor laws such as the Code de l'indigenat. With so much to explore, Haut-Mbomou Prefecture's unique history and beautiful landscapes make it an ideal destination for anyone looking to experience true local culture while enjoying a range of spectacular wildlife sightings.
