Visit Tarapacá

Iquique

The Tarapaca region of Chile is located in the northernmost part of the country, bordering Peru and Bolivia. This region is known for its breathtaking Atacama Desert and beautiful Andean mountain range. Tourists can explore the salt flats of Salar de Atacama, or visit one of the many ancient archaeological sites such as Chaxa Lagoon or Ayllu de Quitor.

The area holds a rich history that dates back to Pre-Columbian times when Araucanian Indians inhabited it. Later on, during colonial times, Juan Bautista Pastene became one of the first conquistadors to travel through Tarapaca and claim it for Spain in 1544. Today, visitors can explore this vibrant cultural heritage in many parts of the region, including Iquique which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.
