The Temple of Heaven is an imperial complex of religious buildings situated in the southeastern part of central Beijing. The complex was visited by the Emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties for annual ceremonies of prayer to Heaven for a good harvest. The Temple of Heaven was inscribed as a World Heritage site in 1998 and was described as “a masterpiece of architecture and landscape design which simply and graphically illustrates a cosmogony of great importance for the evolution of one of the world’s great civilizations…” as the “symbolic layout and design of the Temple of Heaven had a profound influence on architecture and planning in the Far East over many centuries.”[

Plan your visit

Planning a visit to the historic Temple of Heaven in Beijing? Here are some tips and tricks to make your trip as smooth and stress-free as possible: 1. Book tickets online ahead of time - this is especially important during peak tourist season. 2. Pack light but bring lots of water, snacks, and sun protection - Beijing can be quite hot in summer! 3. Respect cultural traditions like not entering the temple wearing shorts or skirts above the knee. 4. Explore the surrounding park before visiting the temple itself - there are plenty of interesting sights to experience here too! 5. If you plan on taking photos, choose early morning or late afternoon when lighting is best for capturing amazing shots!
