The Amazonas Department of Colombia is located in the Amazon rainforest, with a vast range of biodiverse flora and fauna that attract tourists from around the world. Home to more than 200 indigenous tribes, the area has a long history and culture of its own.

One popular tourist destination is Leticia, a small city on the Colombian-Peruvian border where visitors can experience jungle treks or visit nearby animal sanctuaries like Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve. The capital of Leticia sits at the confluence of three great rivers - the Amazon, Putumayo and Yavari - making it an ideal spot for river cruises or fishing trips.

Another interesting location to experience is Mocagua Nature Reserve, where tourists will be able to explore waterfalls amidst lush vegetation and catch glimpses of rare birds and monkeys.

An interesting historical fact about this region is that in 1914 there was an occupation by Peruvians who wanted part of Colombian Amazonia for themselves. This led to what was known as "the Leticia Conflict" between Peru and Colombia which was eventually resolved at The Hague in 1934 with both countries agreeing on their final borders.
