Choco Department is a coastal province located in the northwest of Colombia. It is bordered by Panama to the north, the Pacific Ocean to the west and Ecuador to the south. Choco is known for its tropical rainforest ecosystems with abundant biodiversity which make it an ideal place for exploring and nature-based activities. Popular tourist attractions include El Valle del Cacao, a region dotted with plantations dedicated to producing some of Colombia's finest cocoa; and Utria National Park, an area of lush mangroves and unspoiled beaches that offers spectacular snorkeling, fishing and birdwatching opportunities. An interesting historical fact about Choco was that it was among one of Colombia's first regions colonized by Spanish conquistadors in 1510 who were looking for gold deposits along its rivers.
