The Guaviare Department is a region located in the southeast of Colombia, with its capital district in San Jose del Guaviare. It defines the western limit with the Department of Meta and Vichada, to the north with Caqueta and Putumayo, to the east with Vaupes and to the south it has common borders with Brazil. The department is home to many interesting attractions including El Cabo de la Vela, a gorgeous natural reserve situated at 5000 feet above sea level near Riohacha. Visitors can explore La Serrania de la Macarena National Park, an expansive protected area known for its abundant wildlife and recreational activities like horseback riding and fishing. Another must-see attraction is El Encanto Miravelisimo de los Jirijirimos, a breathtakingly beautiful natural wetland located about 15 minutes away from San Jose del Guaviare by boat. An interesting historical fact about this region is that it was originally inhabited by indigenous tribes like Tamanaco before European colonization took place in 1560.
