The La Guajira Department of Colombia is located in the far north of the country, bordered by Venezuela to the east. It has an array of different terrains ranging from dry deserts to beautiful Caribbean-like beaches along its coasts and is considered one of the most diverse regions in all of South America. It is home to several indigenous cultures such as the Wayuu people, who are known for their colorful textiles and hand-crafted jewelry made from locally sourced materials.

Two great places to visit while touring La Guajira are Cabo de la Vela and Punta Gallinas. Cabo de la Vela offers stunning landscapes overlooking crystal blue waters perfect for snorkeling or kayaking while Punta Gallinas can be explored through four-wheel drive tours across its sand dunes or simply spent by relaxing on pristine sandy beaches with plenty of opportunities for fishing and bird watching available too.

One interesting historical fact about La Guajira is that it was originally part of Venezuela until 1899 when a boundary treaty shifted ownership over these lands back to Colombia marking it as a part of their territory ever since then.
