The department is also home to important historical sites such as Socorro's Casa Terracota Museum where visitors can learn about pre-Columbian artifacts found in the area or appreciate colonial architecture at Bucaramanga Cathedral. An interesting fact about Santander is that it was named after Francisco de Paula Santander who fought alongside General Simon Bolivar during Colombia's independence movement.
