The Vaupes Department of Colombia is located in the south-east corner of the country, on the border with Brazil and Venezuela. It is an area rich in natural beauty, with its lush forests and winding rivers. Many exotic animals can be found here, along with several native Indian tribes.

The capital city of Mitu makes for a great place to visit and explore. There are some interesting attractions here such as churches from colonial times, an animal sanctuary, and a museum dedicated to local art. Not too far from Mitu lies Cano Cristales - dubbed "the river of five colors" due to its turquoise waters that shimmer with brilliant hues during certain months of the year - making it one of Colombia's most popular tourist destinations.

Other points of interest include Cocuy National Park which is home to an impressive collection of glaciers as well as some unique species like pumas and spectacled bears; and El Tuparro National Park where various species like pink dolphins can be found in abundance alongside breathtaking waterfalls lined by tropical rainforests.

An interesting historical fact about Vaupes is that it was once part of Spanish controlled territory before gaining independence in 1819 when Simon Bolivar declared it a sovereign nation separate from New Granada (now Colombia).
