Alajuela is a beautiful and picturesque province located in the Central Valley of Costa Rica. It is located to the northwest of San Jose and is bordered by Heredia, San Ramon, Grecia, Sarchi and Naranjo. Alajuela is home to many tourist destinations such as La Fortuna which hosts Arenal Volcano National Park, one of the most popular volcanoes in Central America. Here you can take part in various outdoor activities such as hiking up the volcano or visiting some of its hot springs. Other attractions include Zarcero's topiary gardens which are adorned with geometric figures sculpted from trimmed bushes. Alajuela also offers plenty of cultural experiences such as Poas Volcano National Park or Mistico Hanging Bridges and Waterfalls.

One interesting historical fact about Alajuela is that it was home to one of the first airports in Costa Rica - Juan Santamaria International Airport - named after a national hero who died defending his country against invading forces during a battle near San Juan River in 1856. Today this airport serves millions of passengers each year making it an important gateway into Costa Rica.
