The bustling downtown area includes many shops and restaurants as well as historic sites like the National Theatre and Jade Museum. In addition to being home to some of Costa Rica's best museums and galleries, San Jose also has plenty of parks and plazas where visitors can relax or people-watch. For a unique experience, visit the nearby La Sabana Metropolitan Park--the largest urban park in Central America--or take a stroll through Barrio Amon for an insight into San Jose's past.

For history buffs, an interesting fact about San Jose is that it was founded in 1737 by Spanish settlers who named it "El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles" (The Town of Our Lady Queen of Angels). Over time this was simplified to "La Ciudad de San Jose", which translates today as "The City of Saint Joseph". No matter what your interests are, there's sure to be something special waiting for you in San Jose!
