It's known for its picturesque colonial architecture, vibrant culture and breathtaking scenery. The provincial capital, Cienfuegos City, is also known as the Pearl of the South; home to many important historical sites such as the Tomas Terry Theatre and Palacio de Valle.

Cienfuegos has a rich history that dates back to 1819 when it was founded by French settlers from Louisiana who named it after Jose Cienfuegos y Montemayor. In 2005 UNESCO declared this city a World Heritage site due to its well-preserved historical buildings that still give an insight into 19th century life in Cuba today.
