Visit Kyrenia District

The Kyrenia District of Cyprus is a stunning and vibrant region, located on the northern coast of the island. It's known for its picturesque harbor, ancient historical sites, and lush Mediterranean landscapes. A great place to visit while in Kyrenia is St. Hilarion Castle, built by Byzantine Emperor Constantine IX Monomachos in the 11th century. The castle once served as an impenetrable fortress and today is filled with spectacular views overlooking the city and surrounding coastline. Another must-see tourist attraction is Bellapais Abbey, a 13th-century Gothic monastery located on a hilltop above the village of Bellapais. Not only does it offer breathtaking views of Kyrenia below, but it was also home to Lawrence Durrell during his time living in Cyprus from 1953 to 1956. An interesting historical fact about Kyrenia District is that it has been occupied by numerous civilizations throughout its history including ancient Greeks, Assyrians and Egyptians--all leaving their own unique mark on this beautiful corner of Cyprus!
