Visit Tadjourah Region

The Tadjourah Region of Djibouti is located on the eastern coast of the Gulf of Tadjoura. It is one of the most beautiful regions in Djibouti, with lush landscapes and a stunning coastline. The region's capital city, Tadjourah, is known for its vibrant markets and historical sites.

Visitors to Tadjourah are spoilt for choice with tourist attractions such as Lake Abbe, a salt lake on the border between Ethiopia and Djibouti which is home to rich flora and fauna, as well as some breathtaking views. Another highlight in the area is Moucha Island National Park, which offers plenty of opportunities to explore nature while taking in views over both land and sea.

Historically speaking, this region has played an important role since pre-colonial times; it was formerly inhabited by Somalis who called it Afmadu (the walled city). This name came from an old fortification that once stood here. During French colonialism in the late 19th century there was a flourishing trade route through this area so locals prospered economically until independence in 1977 when most traders relocated elsewhere.
