Visit Independencia

The Independencia region of the Dominican Republic is located in the south-west of the country, just east of Haiti. It is a wild and rugged area with mountains, valleys, lagoons, and rainforests. The capital city is Jima Abajo.

The two main tourist attractions in Independencia are Teeth of Navassa National Park and Jaragua National Park. Teeth of Navassa has stunning limestone formations that are an amazing sight to behold while Jaragua has mangrove swamps, coral reefs for snorkeling and diving as well as ancient Taino petroglyphs on its walls.

Independencia was a stronghold for Haitian revolutionaries seeking independence from France during the early 19th century; it was also home to a significant population of African slaves who were brought over by Spanish colonists during colonial times who managed to retain their culture even after independence in 1844.
