Visit Santiago Province

Santiago Province is located in the Cibao region of the Dominican Republic. It is a vibrant province that offers travelers stunning views, interesting landmarks and a rich cultural heritage.

As far as sightseeing opportunities are concerned, Santiago Province is home to some of the most impressive colonial-era architecture in all of Latin America. One must-see destination within the area is Monumento Nacional La Isabela, which was originally built as Christopher Columbus' first settlement in 1493 and now stands as an important reminder of the country's significant past. Another great place to visit for travelers interested in getting some insight into Dominican culture and history is The Museo Regional de Historia Santiago - a regional museum dedicated to showcasing artifacts from different eras throughout the region's history.

One interesting historical fact about Santiago Province that many people may not be aware of is its role during the time when Haiti occupied parts of eastern Dominican Republic between 1822 and 1844 - atypically known as "The Haitian Occupation". During this period, several towns within Santiago were part of Haiti's efforts to gain control over parts of what we today know as Dominican Republic - efforts which ultimately failed due to strong resistance from local patriots led by General Pedro Santana, who declared independence for his country on February 27th 1844.
