The Azuay province of Ecuador is located in the south-central part of the country and borders Peru. It is a picturesque part of Ecuador, with high mountain peaks to the east and lush green valleys to the west. Cuenca, its capital city, is a popular tourist destination due to its colonial architecture and museums. Other attractions worth visiting include El Cajas National Park with its many hiking trails and lakeside views, as well as Guadalupe Virgin Hill which offers a stunning view of Cuenca from above.

Azuay has been inhabited since pre-Incan times, but it was not officially declared an autonomous region until 1820 when Simon Bolivar declared it free from Spanish rule during Ecuador's War of Independence. Today Azuay maintains much cultural heritage from its ancient past including traditional dances such as yumbo on festive occasions, festivals like Carnaval de Mosojllacta in May or June each year, and unique cuisine such as hornado (roasted pork).
