Carchi is the northernmost province of Ecuador. It borders Colombia in the north and the provinces of Imbabura, Esmeraldas, and Sucumbios in Ecuador. Located in the foothills of the Andes Mountains, Carchi boasts many magnificent views and rich biodiversity to explore.

The capital city of Carchi is Tulcan which is known for its impressive clocktower that stands at 8 meters high and marks a border line between Ecuador and Colombia. The city also has a beautiful colonial-style cathedral with colorful stained-glass windows that make it worth visiting. Other touristy spots include El Angel Ecological Reserve where visitors can explore cloud forests full of unique species, as well as Otavalo Lagoon which provides great opportunities for bird watching and fishing.

Historically speaking, Carchi was an important part of pre-Hispanic cultures such as Cara or Quituza before being annexed by Spain during colonization in 1563. Later on during colonial times it became one of the most active centers for trade along with Chimborazo, Cotopaxi and Tungurahua Provinces due to its strategic location near the equator line.
