Park, Nature full day

Wādī al-Ḥītān is a paleontological site in the Faiyum Governorate of Egypt, some 150 kilometres (93 mi) south-west of Cairo. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2005 for its hundreds of fossils of some of the earliest forms of whale, the archaeoceti (a now extinct sub-order of whales). The site reveals evidence for the explanation of one of the greatest mysteries of the evolution of whales: the emergence of the whale as an ocean-going mammal from a previous life as a land-based animal. No other place in the world yields the number, concentration and quality of such fossils, nor their accessibility and setting in an attractive and protected landscape.

Plan your visit

Wadi Al-Hitan National Park (Whale Valley) is a stunning natural reserve in Egypt. Here are some tips and tricks to have the best experience: 1. Make sure you wear good walking shoes or sandals as there’s a lot of climbing and exploring to do in the park. 2. Bring plenty of water with you, especially if visiting during hot summer months - it can get very hot! 3. If possible, make the trip during spring or autumn when temperatures are cooler and more comfortable for exploration activities. 4. Don’t forget your sun hat and sunscreen, even if it looks cloudy - UV rays can still be strong at this location! 5. Take lots of pictures - Wadi Al-Hitan is home to some incredible sights that will last long after your visit is over!
