Cabanas is a department in El Salvador located between the departments of San Miguel and Usulutan. The region is set against a breathtaking backdrop of volcanoes, mountainous terrain, rainforest and coffee plantations, making it one of El Salvador's most picturesque regions. It also offers several outdoor activities such as hiking, biking or horseback riding.

Two places to visit while in Cabanas are Jose Guillermo Carbonell Nature Reserve and Suchitoto Lake. Jose Guillermo Carbonell Nature Reserve is the largest nature reserve in El Salvador covering over 16 square kilometers of lush mountainous terrain. The area contains diverse wildlife including monkeys, jaguars, pumas and many species of birds. Suchitoto Lake is a large lake situated on the foothills of San Ignacio volcano with alluring views for visitors to enjoy while visiting the nearby colonial town of Suchitoto where you can find cobblestone streets lined with colorful homes and vibrant art galleries.

An interesting historical fact about Cabanas is that it was home to Revolutionary leader Farabundo Marti who fought for democracy during El Salvador's civil war in 1932-1992. His legacy lives on today as he remains an important figurehead for many citizens seeking social justice throughout Latin America.
