The San Salvador Department of El Salvador is located in the heart of the country and is the largest of all 14 departments. It consists mainly of mountains and volcanoes, making it a great destination for anyone looking to explore nature or experience adventure sports such as hiking, mountain biking and rock climbing. The capital city of San Salvador is also located here, featuring many historical sites such as the National Palace and its Metropolitan Cathedral.

A popular tourist spot in San Salvador is El Boqueron National Park, which offers breathtaking views from its peak at 6200 feet above sea level. Visitors can also take a trip to Lake Ilopango for a boat ride past villages and ruins that once belonged to Native Americans.

An interesting historical fact about this region is that it was one of Central America's first settlements established by Europeans during colonial times. During this period, several Spanish cities were developed here including Soyapango (1525), Apastepeque (1528) and La Paz (1529).
