Visit Sonsonate Department

The Sonsonate Department of El Salvador is located in the westernmost part of the country and is known for its lush landscapes, vibrant culture, and fascinating history. It has many attractions to offer travelers such as Maya Ruins at Joya de Ceren and Ruta el Tigre, a historic train route that passes through tropical rainforests. There are also numerous churches from colonial-era that reflect the region's colonial heritage. For a unique experience, visitors can explore El Trifinio Biosphere Reserve which straddles three countries--El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras--and contains one of Central America's most important habitats for biodiversity conservation. A historical fact about Sonsonate is that it was founded in 1525 by Spanish conquistador Pedro de Alvarado. Tourists should not miss La Bandera Monumento Nacional which is a national monument dedicated to commemorate El Salvador's independence from Spain in 1821.
