Visit Gash-Barka Region

Gash-Barka is a region in western Eritrea. It is one of the nine regions of the country and was established in 1995. Gash-Barka has a population of approximately 1.2 million people, living primarily in rural areas with agriculture being their main source of income. The official language spoken here is Tigrinya, although Arabic and English are also understood by some of its inhabitants.

Gash-Barka has many interesting attractions for visitors to explore, including Debre Sina Monastery which features ancient stone engravings and ruins from the early Aksumite Empire period as well as some stunning views from its hilltop location. Anibir Barrage Lake is another popular spot for tourists to visit, providing serene surroundings to enjoy nature while bird watching or fishing.

The area has strong ties with Eritrea's war for independence; it was an important staging ground during the 30 year conflict with Ethiopia, where many battles were fought by local freedom fighters. It was also home to many refugees who had fled their homes due to the war, making this region an important part of Eritrean history and culture today.
