The Afar Region of Ethiopia is located in the Horn of Africa and is one of the most remote and least developed regions in the country. The region has a unique cultural heritage, with influences from its nomadic pastoralist history as well as ancient African cultures. The landscape here is dominated by starkly beautiful deserts, salt flats, and volcanic rock formations.

One popular tourist destination in the Afar Region is Erta Ale, an active shield volcano that has been erupting since 1906 - it's a great spot for nighttime visits to witness lava flows. Other attractions include hot springs like those at Afrera, Fedis and Galafi which are known for their healing properties. Visitors can also explore Awash National Park which lies on the edges of two incredible deserts - Danakil Depression and Dallol mountain range - or visit Lake Abbe to see its spectacular hot springs, salt deposits, limestone chimneys and basaltic plateaus.

An interesting historical fact about this area is that it was home to some of the earliest prehistoric humans discovered; over 125 fossils belonging to Homo sapiens have been found in various archaeological sites throughout the region dating back nearly 200 000 years ago!
