Visit Amhara Region

The Amhara Region of Ethiopia is located in the northern central part of the country and is one of its largest regions. It's known for its diverse landscapes, ranging from lush fields to towering mountains. It's home to many historical sites, including Yeha Temple which dates back to 700 BC and is considered Ethiopia's oldest structure.

One must-visit tourist spot in the region is Gondar Castle, a sprawling complex with imperial palaces built between 1632 and 1855 by Ethiopian emperors. The site also serves as a religious center, with churches adorned with beautiful ancient frescoes.

Be sure not to miss Debre Birhan Selassie Church while in Amhara - it's one of the most impressive churches in Ethiopia, dating back to the 17th century. The intricate ceiling paintings depicting angels are particularly breathtaking.

The region also played an important role during World War II as it was used by British forces loyal to Emperor Haile Selassie as a base for their campaign against occupying Italian forces from 1936-1941.
