Visit Benishangul-Gumuz Region


The Benishangul-Gumuz Region is a region in the western part of Ethiopia. It is composed of five zones and has an area of 37, 822 square kilometers. It borders Sudan and South Sudan to the west, Oromia Region to the south and east, Amhara Region to the north east, and Afar Region to the northeast.

The Benishangul-Gumuz Region is rich in cultural diversity due to its large number of ethnic groups that include Gumuz, Agew Awi, Amhara and others. It is an important area for eco-tourism as it has many national parks such as Guba Lafto National Park where visitors can view baboons among other wildlife varieties. Metekel National Park which provides stunning mountain views with opportunities for camping and hiking is also well worth a visit.

One interesting historical fact related to this region was that in 1966 it used to be part of Gojjam Province before it became what it is today - The Benishangul-Gumuz Regional State .
