Visit Saunders Island

The Saunders Island of the Falkland Islands is a small but spectacularly beautiful island located in the southwest Atlantic Ocean. With its rugged coastline, white-sand beaches and lush vegetation, it is an outdoor enthusiast's dream destination. Sailing, birdwatching and fishing are all popular activities here.

One of the must-see tourist attractions on Saunders Island is the West Point Lighthouse which was built in 1876 and has been guiding ships for centuries. The lighthouse is open for tours and offers magnificent views of the surrounding area. There are also many stunning hiking trails which offer glimpses of various wildlife species living on this remote island such as penguins, seals and sea lions.

An interesting historical fact about Saunders Island is that it was first discovered by English navigator John Strong in 1690 who named it 'Isla de la Salada' or 'Salt Island' after discovering vast salt deposits there. Later Captain John Jeffreys renamed it 'Saunders Island' after his wife Margaret Saunders Jeffreys in 1764 making it one of the oldest British settlements in history still standing today!
